Inclusive design aims to take into account people of different situations when designing an object or activity, so that as many people as possible can participate in your design. There are so many different things happening in this world.Inclusive design needs to take this into account.
In the case of these two years, more learning has moved online because of COVID-19, more online teaching, video courses and online exams are being applied to online teaching. Different situations, such as time difference and network, should also be taken into account when designing online teaching.
Our group’s interactive learning resources are designed to teach students about public goods in the economy. This is an online teaching, also carried on the inclusive design.
Our teaching is for all kinds of students across Canada, and our group assumes that there are two special types of students which are English language learner (EEL) and single parent who is working full-time and has 2 kids in elementary school. The difficulty for English language learners is that they have difficulty reading the teaching materials. English is not their first language, and there are many foreign students in Canada. For single parents, what they need most is time. With two children to take care of and a full-time job, they have little time to study.
For English language learners:
- Each topic of this course includes video and reading passages.English language learners can first understand the learning content through video, and then read the teaching materials, so that they can better understand the content they need to learn.
- English subtitles will be added to the video. Adding English learners’ first language directly may destroy their English learning environment, so the best way is to show only English subtitles.
For single parents:
- They have little time, but their comprehension ability will be relatively strong, so they can use the free time to watch the teaching video, and then use the rest time to read and group discussion is the most effective.
- There is no word limit in group discussion, just how well you understand the content, so single parents can spend very little time in group discussion.
- Single parents will be allowed to apply for a change in test times, but they will need to apply to the teacher in advance.
For different learners, the fastest way to understand the learning content is through video, because video can make learners think through sound, image and text at the same time, so the efficiency is very high. Among the resources needed for this teaching, the main method is to let students learn by video, and then help students understand the learning content through the article.The instructional videos cover most of the content of each topic.
